Bush Kinder Program

We believe that connecting with nature is a big part of childhood and plays a key role in a child’s development. Research shows that children benefit from having more unstructured time outdoors, which is why we make outdoor experiences a priority in our curriculum. Bush Kinder is a unique part of our program that builds on our regular indoor and outdoor learning, giving children even more opportunities to grow, explore, and thrive.

Bush Kinder gives children uninterrupted time in a rich outdoor setting, which encourages curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. The outdoor environment allows for experiences that aren’t always possible in a traditional home or kinder space. Children can engage in cooperative play, or if they usually prefer quiet indoor time, they might try something more physical or adventurous!

At Bush Kinder, children can be playing in the rain, rolling down grassy hills, balancing on fallen logs, searching for insects, drawing with sticks, storytelling, or simply exploring. Our educators observe each child’s development and interests, linking their experiences to the five Learning Outcomes in the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework. This helps us tailor learning to each child while supporting them to take on new challenges and develop important life skills along the way.

We’re committed to including First Nations perspectives across everything we do. Bush Kinder gives children a meaningful way to connect with the rich cultures, knowledge, and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through respectful, place-based learning, children build a deeper connection to the land and its stories. We acknowledge that we learn and play on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and we aim to create a culturally safe and inclusive environment for all children—this is at the heart of our philosophy.
